Several of the shops that filled Los Portales have moved to other buildings around Carefree's Town Center. The Town of Carefree's October newsletter says the redevelopment of Los Portales Mall into Orchard Street Market is "officially underway," and it lists where those tenants went: Sundancer Center, Spanish Village, Carefree Plaza, and the post office building on Easy Street. The replacement has a contractual completion deadline of July 1, 2028. From Desert Mountain, the nearest small downtown could have a building under redevelopment at its center for as long as the next 20 months. The shops you used to find in one place are now spread across several centers.
The schedule for the next two weeks happens to take you past most of the new addresses.
The Building at Easy Street and Ho Hum
The property is 99 Easy Street. Mayor Crane called it the heart of downtown at Easy Street and Ho Hum when the Town Council took up the project on June 2, 2026. The council approved a development agreement with Los Portales HR, LLC 7-0. Cave Creek Carefree Independent covered the vote two days later.
The plan, as presented to council, calls for a curated public marketplace of specialty food vendors and restaurant, wine bar and experiential uses on the lower level. It also includes restoring and modernizing the historic Los Portales building. The Town's own announcement names Ken Martindale and Sharon Aulicino as the concept's co-founders and Charlie Yamashita as operating partner.
The numbers in the agreement show what the Town expects from the building:
| Term in the June 2 agreement | Figure |
|---|---|
| Estimated private investment | More than $5 million |
| Minimum developer investment | $2.2 million |
| Minimum taxable sales revenue threshold | $2.6 million |
| Cap on the total incentive package | $1.3 million |
| Completion deadline | July 1, 2028 |
The sales threshold stands out. Carefree's support is tied to the market producing at least $2.6 million in taxable sales, which only works with steady weekly shopping traffic. The agreement also requires public restrooms, which matters on an event night downtown. The posted minutes are still marked draft.
The Orchard Street Market website is still recruiting founding purveyors, and it lists vendor categories but no named vendors. The July 1, 2028 date is a completion deadline, not an announced opening date.
Where the Los Portales Tenants Went
According to the Town's October newsletter, the tenants moved here:
| Business | New location |
|---|---|
| Arizona Territorial Antiques | Sundancer Center |
| Thunderbird Artists Gallery | Sundancer Center |
| Carefree Collective | Spanish Village |
| Little Barber Shop | Spanish Village |
| It's a Nail Thing | Spanish Village |
| Compass & Crow Studios | Carefree Plaza |
| Local Finds | 100 Easy Street, Post Office Building, and Frontier Town in Cave Creek |
The moves were not even. Spanish Village picked up three businesses: a boutique, a barber and a nail studio. Those are errand stops, not occasional destinations, so they bring repeat visits with them. Sundancer Center picked up a gallery and an antiques dealer. Local Finds now has two locations, one on Easy Street and one in Cave Creek's Frontier Town.
Galleries that didn't come from Los Portales have moved too. The Sonoran Arts League gallery is now at 30 Easy Street, Suite A, next to Venues Café. Its earlier address was 7275 E. Easy Street, Suite A104, across from the Carefree post office, so the old directions no longer apply. The Town has also mentioned Modernly Mindful as a newly opened gallery at 201 Easy Street, #105.
In short, many familiar names are still in town, but you'll need to look for them at new addresses.
Two Weeks of Dates That Pass the New Addresses
October's calendar fits well with the move. Most of the events below happen within walking distance of the relocated shops:
- Tuesday, October 13, 5 to 6 p.m. The Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber holds a ribbon-cutting for Sonoran Art League-Gallery at its new location, 30 Easy St., Suite A.
- Wednesday, October 14, 5 to 9 p.m. Taste of Cave Creek takes place at Stagecoach Village, 7100 East Cave Creek Road. The Chamber describes more than 25 local restaurants, craft breweries and live music.
- Thursday, October 15, 4 to 7 p.m. Carefree Art Night returns to Carefree Town Center. The Town notes that "several galleries" are "now in new locations" this season.
- October 15 to 18. Desert Foothills Theater stages Little Women: The Broadway Musical outdoors at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. General admission is $30.
- October 19 to 25. Fall Carefree Restaurant Week.
- Friday, October 23, 5:30 p.m. YMCA x Carefree Trunk or Treat along Easy Street and at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion.
- Tuesday, October 27, 5 to 8 p.m. Community Fest at Harold's Corral Stage '35, with music, food, tastings and support for local nonprofits.
Art Night is the best date for learning the new layout. The Town describes it as an evening stroll through Carefree Town Center's galleries, artist-run shops and studios, and it repeats every third Thursday. The rest of the 2026–27 season falls on November 19, December 17, January 21, February 18, March 18, April 15 and May 20. If you miss October, there are seven more chances before summer.
Restaurant Week Is Your Dinner Plan for the Same Walk
The Carefree Restaurant Association calls the town's dining scene "proudly independent and family-owned." Its fall Restaurant Week comes just before Arizona Restaurant Week. Participating restaurants offer either a special lunch menu or a two-, three- or four-course dinner for $33, $44 or $55. Sixteen restaurants are on the list, including Brix Wines, Carefree Coffee Roastery, English Rose Tea Room, Giordano's Trattoria Romana, Keelers Neighborhood Steakhouse, Raven's View, Spotted Donkey Cantina and Venues Café.
A few listings are worth knowing before you go:
- Alberto's Ristoranté, 7171 E. Cave Creek Rd., offers a three-course dinner for $55. Choices include salmon carpaccio or burrata with prosciutto to start, veal scaloppini or branzino as a main, and tiramisu or a fig marmalade tart for dessert. Tax, gratuity and drinks are extra. It's open Tuesday through Sunday from 4 p.m.
- Athens on Easy Street, 121 Easy Street, serves modern Mediterranean food Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday until 4 p.m.
- Black Mountain Cafe, 7211 E. Ho Road #23, has been a breakfast-and-lunch spot and now serves dinner with live music on Fridays. Tuesday through Saturday it's open until 9 p.m.
One listing needs checking first. Pizzicata is on the Restaurant Week roster, but the Town's October newsletter said Pizzicata Carefree was temporarily closed for renovations, with a reopening date to be announced. Since then, its events calendar has listed live music at the Carefree restaurant starting October 15. Call before you plan a Restaurant Week dinner there.
The New Openings Are Happening Around the Edges
Inside Town Center, the biggest change is a building under redevelopment. The new openings are mostly outside it. Freeborn Marketplace at 6268 E. Cave Creek Road, Suite 4, in Cave Creek, held its Chamber ribbon-cutting on September 29. Down the road, the Cave Creek Carefree Independent profiled Creekers in June, when the burger spot at 6554 E. Cave Creek Road, Suite 14, was planning to open in August.
That's the layout until Orchard Street Market opens. For now, Carefree's center is spread out. Spanish Village handles more of the everyday errands, Sundancer Center and Easy Street hold more of the galleries, and Cave Creek Road gets the new storefronts. The market at 99 Easy Street is meant to bring food, wine and foot traffic back to one corner, and the agreement holds the developer to a $2.6 million sales threshold and a July 1, 2028 deadline.
